Geography and population

Political capital of the Normandy region and seat of the Normandy regional council, Caen has a municipal population of 105,354 inhabitants and the population of the urban area is 419,974 inhabitants. It is located in the Calvados region (14). Its neighboring municipalities are: Saint-Germain-La-Blanche-Herbe, Saint-Contest, Epron, Hérouville-Saint-Clair, Carpinet, Bretteville-sur-Odon, Louvigny, Fleury-sur-Orne, Ifs, Cormelles-le-Royal , Mondeville.

Transport

 
The agglomeration of Caen is served by three motorways: the A13, the A84 and the A88, which allows the city to be connected with Paris, Brittany and Maine. The city has a train station, the port of
Ouistreham connected with England and an airport recognized as the largest in Normandy. Intra-Muros the city is crisscrossed by tram networks as well as by forty bus lines serving the whole city. Finally, there are more than 50 km of cycle paths accompanied by a low-cost self-service bicycle system.

Economy


Caen counts on the big companies in its center to boost its economy such as Valéo or Orange. The city now counts among its main economic activities boating, high-tech activities of electronic transactions and call centers. Agriculture is also one of the activities of its suburbs, we find within it the headquarters of the Agrial cooperative bringing together more than 10,000 employees and 10,000 member farmers.

Trade


The city has in its center a shopping center "the banks of the Orne" as well as many pedestrian shopping streets such as rue Saint Pierre. There is also a "Spring" and a "Gallery Lafayette ”side by side in the city center. The suburbs of Caen are full of famous shopping centers such as the Mondeville shopping center.

Education


There are more than 30,000 students in Caen. Originally from the University of Caen, these students represent the heart of the city’s economy and have made the city more active. These students also come from the grandes écoles found in Caen as a business school (EM Normandie), three engineering schools, the Caen school of fine arts and many others. The students are mainly spread over the city's 5 campuses.
